Containing over 1.3 million items, the Royal Airforce Museum in Hendon is certainly worth a visit. If you have a passion for aviation, military history, or are simply looking for an enjoyable day out, then the museum is the perfect destination. This museum really is huge and it’s easy to spend the best part of day there walking around the extraordinary exhibits and taking a ride in the flying simulators - just make sure you’re good with heights! The range of original planes is staggering and almost all the iconic planes from both World Wars are shown in their original glory including Sopwith Camels, Spitfires, Lancaster Bombers and even American B17 Bombers. But the planes don’t stop there, the fast jet era is also covered with some fantastic examples that are still operational in forces now including the Panavia Tornado strike aircraft. However, despite it’s exhibits reflecting aerial conflict through the ages, the National RAF Museum doesn’t think of itself as a Military Museum, rather as one that captures human stories. For the curators, the pilots and people who worked in the industry are as important as the machines themselves. And it’s just one of these stories that captivated Bruce - the story of Barnes Wallis and the bouncing bomb which the museum has a beautiful original housed in one of the hangars. Incredibly, Mr Crompton has just bought one himself and is the process of restoring it, we’ll show you it when he finishes. In the meantime, pop down to the museum in Hendon and take a look at theirs!

Old Buckenham was home to the 453rd US Bomber group, part of the 8th Airforce in the second world war. It’s claim to fame was that Jimmy Stewart and Walter Matthau both were stationed there at different parts of the war.

Military Museums in the UK, and around the world, are facing serious headwinds and some are in real danger of shutting their doors permanently. When a museum closes, its contents are either is put into storage with other museums, or it gets sold to private collectors. Sadly, these items, part of our national story, get hidden away from the public’s eyes forever. Visiting these institutions helps stop this from happening.
